Infertile Men at Higher Risk for Cancer

Studies show that there is a 47% cancer risk increase among infertile men, compared with fertile men. This is partially due to the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) but it is not entirely full proof to say it actually increases the risk.

Results in tests in order to see what factors in infertile men increase risk are very skewed. There is not enough evidence to accuse ICSI for an increase; and it doesn’t have consistent results.

For example there are some studies that will say that infertile men have an increased chance for prostate cancer yet another study will show that fertile men are at a higher risk. There are more studies that are looking deeper to find stronger evidence, and they started by taking data from cancer registries in Sweden along with any records of assisted reproduction.

After the data was analyzed among 1.2 million men, it was established that men that had the ICSI had a 47% increase of cancer risk. Meanwhile the men that went through a natural form did not increase in risk.

For woman, it was found that nulliparous women have a higher risk for ovarian cancer. Tests were performed to see if there are any relationships between having an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

ART has a low association with ovarian cancer among infertile women. It is recommended that if women are wondering if they should use ART or not, they should do so. It’s more preferred than the IVF.
